My work is about stability, finding balance in life and being grounded. I use pressure and weight to enable the wearer to feel secure and tranquil. Therefore, all the work is physically very heavy as far as jewelry pieces are concerned. My aim is to give a sense of grounding and tranquility by using the mass of the pure metals, bismuth, tin, and copper. Through the repetitive act of weaving I find balance in making these works, with the intent of transferring its calming effect to the wearer. Some of the pieces however, shed their weight over time since stability is not constant and not guaranteed; it is ephemeral. My pieces are helpful to find balance over and over again.
By combining hand woven pieces with cast bismuth and tin is how each piece from this series of work is made. I weave each piece by hand on a loom but instead of using typical yarn or fabric I use a tubular color coated copper mesh resulting in a metal cloth. To create each stone, I make open face molds from real stones I have found, in combination with using sand casting techniques. I thoughtfully fully integrate each stone during the weaving process. Alternatively, pouring molten bismuth directly on the tubular color coated mesh before weaving it creates the pieces that shed their weight. The title for each piece is a reference to its weight in grams. I use rocks as a symbol in my work because rock stacking originally inspired me, an art form, which requires patience and sensitivity to generate stacks using the rock’s weight to create a stable structure. However, now through this process I am actually focused on the body’s relation with the weight of the rocks to create stability for the wearer, with the ultimate goal to make a body of work with physical conceptuality.
